Pre-Marital / Post-Marital Counselling

I am a certified Prepare and Enrich counsellor which means that I use the Prepare / Enrich assessment tool in helping couples examine key areas of compatibility in their relationship.  I recommend 5 sessions of pre-marital counselling which cover topics like: exploring your relationship strength and growth areas, strengthening your communication skills (including listening skills and assertiveness skills), resolving conflicts, exploring your family-of-origin issues, money matters, setting the stage for intimacy, and determining priorities.  In addition, I offer 1 post-marital check-up six months after the wedding day, if desired.

The purpose of pre-marital counselling is:

• Explore strength and growth areas and identify potential growth areas that could develop into problems during marriage if left unchecked
• Strengthen communication skills
• Identify and manage major stressors
• Resolve conflict
• Develop a more balanced relationship
• Explore family of origin issues
• Discuss financial planning and budgeting
• Establish personal, couple and family goals
• Understand and appreciate personality differences to help couples strengthen their relationship
• Discuss practical issues of marriage
• Prepare the couple for some of the potential life-challenges faced along the journey

Topics covered:

1. Exploring your relationship strength and growth areas–Communication: Assertiveness and Active Listening & Personal Stress Profile
2. Conflict Resolution – dealing with anger, seeking and granting forgiveness
3. Time & Money matters – Financial management, determining priorities – goal setting together, decision-making, living and working
4. Setting the stage for intimacy – leisure activities, sex and affection, beliefs & values, expectations
5. Family of Origin issues – couple and family maps, children and parenting, roles, personality style, family relations
